Community Partners
Over the years, the UCSF Wellness Center has partnered with several community organizations to provide input into the design of our research protocols, clinical programs, patient recruitment and engagement.
California Children Services
The primary purpose of CCS San Francisco is to serve medically complex, low income children in San Francisco County whose qualifying medical conditions require care from specialty pediatric physicians (i.e. children with chronic illness). About 70% of CCS recipients are Medi-Cal eligible. CCS provides diagnostic and treatment services, medical case management, and physical and occupational therapy. It is administered with Federal, State, and County funding as a partnership between county health departments and the California Department of Health Care Services.
Support For Families
SF Support for Families of Children with Disabilities
Since 1982, Support for Families of Children with Disabilities has offered information, education, and parent-to-parent support free of charge to families and professionals of children with any kind of disability or special health care need in San Francisco. The purpose of Support for Families is to ensure that families of children with any kind of disability or special health care need, and the providers who serve them, have the knowledge and support to make informed choices that enhance children's development and well-being. We promote partnership with families, professionals and the community at large, because it is through partnership that we create a community where our children can flourish. Juno Duenas and Nina Boyle will participate in the collaborative to represent the family perspective.
Other UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Patient & Family Advisory Councils
UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Family Advisory Council (FAC):
The Family Advisory Council was developed in 2006 to provide a forum for interaction between families and hospital staff, and a mechanism to respond to patient and family feedback. The council functions as a consultant to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in areas of family care. The Council members include UCSF community families and hospital leadership staff. Currently there are 15 parent members, representing diverse experiences in all units of the children's hospital including: acute and critical care, surgery, rehabilitation, oncology, bone marrow transplant, outpatient clinics, labor and delivery and the intensive care nursery. Many of these families have children with chronic disease and they have lived the experience of these conditions. The creation of this council reflects the institution’s value of the opinions and suggestions of families, as well as the belief that families bring unique knowledge, skills and experience to caring for a child. They have experience working with investigators on research projects and are eager to partner with us in the development of CER questions.
UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Youth Advisory Council (YAC):
The Youth Advisory Council was established in 2013 as a platform for teenagers and young adults to collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and strengthen the partnership between the patients, family, medical team, and community. The council empowers teens/young adults to take on a more active role in their care, facilitates peers to peer support, and provides educational opportunities for providers to learn how to best care for the adolescent population. Teen/young adult patients are in a transitioning phase of life, vacillating between the pediatric and adult world, both medically and personally; this allows for a very unique and insightful perspective. Currently, there are 12 members, ranging between 16-23years old, representing a variety of diagnoses and experiences, including: inpatient and acute care, lung transplant, gastrointestinal diagnosis, muscular dystrophy, and so much more.
